The Ministry of Transport, Communications, and Information Technology is participating in Oman Sustainability Week 2026, from May 18 to May 20, at the Oman Convention and Exhibition Center, thru a series of projects and initiatives in the field of sustainable transformation. The ministry's investments in green mobility projects reached approximately 320 million Omani Rials in 2025, including the establishment of the National Green Transport Company, green ship recycling projects, as well as projects to develop electric vehicle maintenance centers and expand the electric charging infrastructure.

The ministry also announced its target to install 350 electric charging points by 2027, in line with the rapid increase in the number of electric vehicles, which exceeded 5,800 vehicles by the end of the first quarter of 2026. This coincides with the culmination of its efforts by receiving the Gold Award for Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) within the Oman Sustainability Week 2026 awards.

Mazin bin Rashid Al-Habsi, a project engineer at the Carbon Neutrality Office, stated that the contents and presentations of the Ministry of Transport, Communications, and Information Technology's booth at the Oman Sustainability Week exhibition focused on developing green transport projects and sustainable infrastructure, along with initiatives supporting the transition to a low-carbon economy. This enhances the Sultanate of Oman's position as a regional hub for quality projects related to sustainability. He explained that the ministry showcases several pioneering projects within the sustainable maritime transport sector, including the establishment of a green ship recycling facility in the Khatmat Malaha area, which supports the application of circular economy principles and the adoption of sustainability practices in the maritime sector.

It also reviewed the project of providing ships with electrical power while docked (Shore Power) at Sohar Port, which contributes to reducing carbon emissions resulting from the operation of ship engines while they are docked at the port. Additionally, it presented the project for establishing the first integrated facility for producing green methanol in the Sultanate of Oman, aimed at developing a comprehensive system for producing and supplying ships with green fuel, thereby contributing to the acceleration of the transition toward low-emission maritime shipping solutions.

Al-Habsi stated that during its participation, the ministry presents the most prominent targets of the electric mobility sector for 2026, which include announcing licenses for electric charger operators and launching the regulatory framework for electric charging points, contributing to market regulation and establishing the necessary technical and operational frameworks to develop the electric charging system according to best practices. Moreover, the ministry aims this year to launch the national platform for the "Shahin" electronic application, which seeks to provide a unified digital platform that facilitates electric vehicle users' access to charging stations, allows them to check their operational status, and enhances the user experience. Additionally, there are plans to announce fees for electric charging services to ensure the sector's sustainability and stimulate investment in it.

The project engineer at the Carbon Neutrality Office pointed out that the ministry's booth is witnessing an increasing number of visitors, especially following the announcement of two memoranda of understanding in the fields of sustainable mobility. There has been a rise in inquiries about the feasibility of relying on electric bicycles and drones for delivering food and goods within the Sultanate of Oman.

In this context, a suitable space has been allocated in the ministry's booth to showcase the "last-mile delivery" initiative using electric bicycles, as it is one of the pioneering initiatives supporting sustainable urban transport, aiming to reduce carbon emissions and promote the use of clean transportation methods in the delivery services sector.  In addition to showcasing the latest future technologies and innovations in the transportation and other logistics sectors, including the project for order delivery using drones, this step reflects the trend toward adopting smart and innovative solutions that enhance the efficiency of delivery services and support sustainability goals.
