Aviation Safety Investigation: Runway Incursion Involving Two Training Aircraft of Oman Aviation Academy
Year: 2025
On 6 May 2025, a serious runway incursion occurred at Sohar International Airport involving two Oman Aviation Academy Diamond DA40 NG training aircraft (A4O-OAI and A4O-OAG). The solo student pilot of A4O-OAG took off while A4O-OAI, with an instructor and student onboard, was still backtracking on the runway after performing a touch-and-go and an Engine Failure After Take-Off (EFATO) exercise. The Aerodrome Flight Information Service Officer (AFISO) had cleared the student for take-off “at own discretion” without realizing the runway was occupied, leading to a near-miss but no injuries or damage. The investigation attributed the incident to miscommunication, limited visibility from the AFIS room, lack of radio readback, and insufficient situational awareness by both pilots and the AFISO. Key recommendations included relocating the AFIS operations to the control tower, enhancing AFISO training, improving communication systems, and considering the implementation of full Air Traffic Control (ATC) services at Sohar Airport.
